/ WARNING

This isn’t an easy reading website nor a space for boring people.
The development and evaluation of any of the urban prescriptions listed here have been complex processes and full of interrelationships. We continue interchanging political negotiations with urban alegality.
And, of course, constructing together the network of Arquitecturas Colectivas that offers the information, protocols and beers to the collectives and individuals that want to assume responsabilities.

Spiders

Synopsis

The Spiders are projects which brings together the prosthesis of buildings and the occupation of empty lots. The idea is for the prosthesis to gain independence to occupy spaces whether inside or outside, public or private. The Spiders can be used in different ways, they don’t consume floor space and the area underneath them is open for free movement or for the installation of other uses. They can stand alone or be used in conjunction with another building; connected to it on a logistical level but still remaining physically separate.

The first prototype was born from the collaboration with Julio Barba, engineer and entrepreneur of Rehasa Estructuras, with the opportunity to experiment at a different scale a system originally devised to stabilize buildings undergoing renovation. The enthusiasm and involvement of Julio was such that he yielded the structures of the first three spiders built.

Evaluation and Protocols

For the first prototype two containers was recovered from Saragossa from the six that were given to the Polytechnic University of Valencia. UPV intented to create a self-managing and participative space linked to a student collective – at first Arquitectura Se Mueve from Valencia, and later because of difficulties in finding an ideal location, to a student collective from Gandia. The containers were being stored in this city and the complex and slow administrative procedures necesary for carrying out the project were waiting to be solved. At this time, it just happened that Recetas Urbanas found a site in Seville. Property of the Innovation Ministry of the Government of Andalusia, located in Isla de la Cartuja. The site had housed the Austrian Pavilion during the Expo’92 but was in desuse since it was taken down. Its transfer was negociated to set up a mobile cultural facility, Pista Digital. We settled on an agreement for temporary occupation of public ground with a rental contract. Seeing as we could rely on this ground, we decided to release one of the containers being stored by UPV and to set up the studio office next to the Pista Digital construction site.

The Spiders have the capacity of being installed and uninstalled in one day. With just two people, one construction stair set and a medium size crane, it is easy to construct it. However, it is recommended to do it with more friends since the experience and the action of doing it are worth it.
Another important characteristic of them is how easy is to put together their metallic structural pieces. If you follow every step of the plans, self-build manuals and you take care of the construction safety recommendations (to do not break your back or to hit your feet!), it is possible to create a new complete building in a record time. A building which will be able to be used immediately. The reward for the participants of the construction is higher and higher according as the huge “Mecano” is being assembled. The “MEGA” system of Rehasa is the main element in the structure. It conforms also the frame which will be elevated with the medium size crane to add it four provisional vertical pillars to stablish the level and stabilize the structure. After, the six or eight final legs will be installed. To do so, it is recommended to look for the gravity centre to be able to pull it up with the element of anchorage to the floor parallel to the ground plane. In this way, you avoid some problems on the moment to join them.
Once it is finalized the setting-up of the spider legs, the four vertical temporary pillars have to be withdrawn. To do this it is necessary to load the structure and put it to work. At the end, four tensors are installed to improve the stability of the structure once the containers would be placed. The Spider easy construction has been allowed us to change easily the location, and being able to play with the times of the legal and bureaucratic procedures.
For the Espacio Iniciarte a new container was adquired to build a small spider as a art object to ilustrate part of Recetas Urbanas work during the retrospective exhibition “La Socialización del Arte o el sistema de protección de testigos”.
In the Sant Pere de Torelló Collective Architectures meeting another container of Saragossa was reused, one of the four “in transit” containers that Straddle3 had picked up from the Ramblas in Barcelona but had not put to use again.
