INSTITUTIONAL PROSTHESIS 1

CAPSULE 1 S.C.

Venue of living-intervention-exhibition: Finland Pavilion. FIDAS. COAAOc.

Sevilla, 13 March1998 - 13 May 1999 (1ª phase).

All artistic (architectural) manifestations are submitted to a process of comprehensive demarcation by the cultural institutions which evaluate works of art, defining and specifying their various parameters.

They are all quite aware, though they do need constant reminders, that no reality, least of all the artistic (architectural), is immutable or static. It is a curve of different values producing variable intervals which show us a reality that is open fo interpretation, uncertain, mutable and which may even disappear.

CAPSULE 1.S.C. is installed orthopaedically in the Finland Pavilion, the head office of the FIDAS Cultural Foundation of the COAAOc, as a spatial and functional prosthesis which acts as a support for performances and exhibitions which take place and are proposed as an alternative to their institutionally chosen counterparts, with the generally-accepted role of preparing the perceptive ground within perfectly outlined fields of meaning.

The independent organization of activities in the Capsule creates a new position, distancing itself from the institution by publicizing projects and experiences of people who have not been examined on the basis of their cultural relevance or their curriculum, and who direct and manage their own installation.

EXECUTION UNIT

Local artist reviews, reinterprets and reuses a cultural institution to expand its capacity through the installation of an orthopedic capsule in the Finnish Pavilion building of the COAAOC, enlarging its spatial and functional capacity for a year, during which a parallel program of events is organized without institutional control. This is managed independently of the selection criteria employed by institutional functionaries, strictly according to the order of arrival of collective and individual petitions for the use of the space for expository, playful or domestic purposes. A publicity campaign is also launched to offer free use of the capsule to the interested public. The capsule is made of the materials used in Urban Situation no. 5, but in this new configuration they lean against the passageway that unites the two parts of the building with UPN 200 beams and 8 mm steel sheets.  Steel tubes and collars were also used in constructing the banister, which was welded with a tube measuring 100 x 100 x 3 mm and screwed to the capsule with 4 - 10 mm metric screws, wide-brimmed washers and nuts, tightened "real good" by Joselito and Urbano, who collaborated selflessly in the work of transport and assembly.
